Tropical Bio -diversity Studies in Kerala

Faculty- led programs for US universities in Kerala

Kerala known as ‘God’s Own Country’ because of its lush vegetation ,rich wild life , tall mountains and serene beaches and pristine backwaters, is certified by the National Geographic Traveler as one of the ten paradises in the world. This makes Kerala occupy a hotspot on the tourism map of the world and countless number of foreigners come to its shore.

Kerala is a green wonderland with a unique geography and is known internationally as a hot spot in biodiversity. This tropical paradise is an excellent natural history making destination for biodiversity studies. Kerala’s spectacular tropical rain forests in the Western Ghats are home for exotic wild life, diverse plants, beautiful birds and butterflies.

The endemic regions like Silent Valley and Agasthyamala hold the secrets for speciation and evolution. The inventory of diverse species in Kerala is very impressive:

1500 out of 4500 species of flowering plants are endemic. There are 6,000 species of insects, 508 species of birds, 169 species of reptiles, 89 amphibians, 202 freshwater fishes and 102 species of mammals.

Back waters and estuaries of coastline areas, swamps, mangroves and wetlands of the lowland Kerala, the agro biodiversity of the midland Kerala and the various forest types, are natural laboratories for students to learn about the diverse ecosystems of a tropical region.

Kerala’s forests like Tropical evergreen, semi evergreen, Moist and Dry deciduous forests, Shola forests and Grasslands support biological communities with a remarkable array of genetic variations. This lovely land has all the factors for field study, adventure and research a real treasure hunt awaits the explorers.

A guided exposure to Kerala’s landscape will give an understanding of the ecosystems, bioregions, cultural traditions and history. Realizing this, IISAC in association with TIES and the University of Kerala have developed a field school called Tropical Green School (www.tropicalgreenschool.org) Using the combined expertise of IISAC, TIES and UoK, a field study model was developed for professors and students from all over the world to visit Kerala for nature studies. This unique curriculum is offered for various academic credits with field skills necessary for career building.
